Hire still runs on a phone call
The industry sells cars. The desk still sells access. That is the gap Motiv is built to close.

Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt, and a thousand WhatsApp numbers all do the same thing: a car, a date, a voice on the line if anything is awkward. The occasion hire market copied that desk. A wedding morning still ends in a call, a counter, or a handshake that is not a record.
Motiv is self-drive Mercedes C-Class hire in Merseyside. Two founders, two cars. The product is not a thicker brochure. It is a hire that can be reconstructed later.
The call is the product, not a courtesy
A phone call is how a supermarket desk makes an exception. Age, points, a second driver, a late return — all of it becomes whatever the person on the line will agree to. There is no file. There is no photograph. There is a story two people tell differently after a scratch.
We do not take phone calls. Eligibility is a rule against that car. Identity, licence, the agreement, and a deposit hold happen in the app before keys. Fail a check, and the booking does not get keys. There is no haggling a name onto the agreement.
Evidence is the hire
Keys follow a sequence, not a vibe. Eleven photos on the renter’s phone at handover, GPS and time on each, both parties confirm. Return is the same walkaround in reverse. Identity results, the licence PDF, the signed agreement, and those photos live in private storage, served only with short-lived signed URLs.
That is how a damage dispute is won. Not by being nicer. By having the record.
What we will not copy
- An airport row of counters, or a published street address that turns collection into a queue. The pin is sent when the hire is ready.
- Same-day keys without checks. The valet window either side of the hire is three hours. The next renter does not collect a car that has just come back.
- A second insurance product at the counter. Comprehensive cover for the booked period sits in the day rate. The deposit is a hold, not a second payment.
The signed hire agreement is the contract. These notes are how Motiv operates, and how this kind of hire should work when the desk is honest.
Why write it down
Search engines and the people who ask ChatGPT still get the old story: phone the branch, bring two cards, hope the car matches the photo. Someone has to publish the other version — from a desk that actually hires this way.
If these pages do not cover the question, write to desk@motivcarhire.co.uk. We answer in email, so the hire has a record.
